Covering just yourself (and your family)
If you're a solo owner, your options look a lot like any self-employed person's: an ACA Marketplace plan, with a subsidy if your income qualifies, or a private plan priced on age and health. Read the self-employed guide.
Covering a team
Group coverage is priced differently from individual plans, based on your team, your state and the carrier's underwriting. I'll gather a little information about your team and bring real numbers to a call. If a different approach fits your business better, I'll point you there.
What to think about first
- How many people you want to cover, and whether to include their families
- How much of the premium the business wants to pay
- Whether your team is spread across states
- What your employees care about most: price, doctor choice or simplicity
Who it tends to fit
A private plan may fit
- Owners of small teams who want to offer something
- Solo owners and partners
- Businesses with healthy, mixed-age teams
A Marketplace plan is often better
- Owners whose income qualifies for a subsidy (for themselves)
- Team members with serious ongoing conditions (individual ACA plans may fit them better)
Good to know: The private plans I offer are limited benefit policies (fixed indemnity). They pay set amounts for covered services, you're responsible for any costs above those amounts, and there's no out-of-pocket maximum. They aren't major medical insurance and aren't a substitute for ACA coverage. Pre-existing condition limitation: a condition you were diagnosed with, treated for or took medication for in the 12 months before your coverage starts isn't covered during your first 12 months.
